Continuing the geography nerd theme for today...

A former student in one of my intro geography classes sent me this link (thank you!) from xkcd.com. It needs no further explanation, except to say that I always preferred pseudoconic projections like the Bonne or Sylvanus (because I'm a lover, not a fighter), or even a straight up conical projections (because I have a dirty mind, and they always looked like butt cheeks to me!). Anyway, enjoy:

Periechon is a term from classical Greek philosophy, in particular the work of Aristotle. He believed that space was not an empty vacuum, but that it was another medium altogether, something he called periechon - which can loosely be translated to mean "that which surrounds." His was a relational epistemology in which form is not altogether intrinsic to an object, but is given form by that which surrounds it. This concept is appealing to me, as a geographer, because it is a recognition of the how the environment shapes us, shapes our bodies, our minds, and our social relations. On a fundamental level, the concept of periechon provides a framework for examining the complex relationship between us and the world we inhabit.

Whoaa...I really needed a blog so I could have a place to say intense shit like that. So, a lot of what I post on here will consist of geographical theory and philosophy, undoubtedly laced with jargon and the big words I learned in college. But I also want to have a place where I can test out ideas, try and make geography jokes, and repost stuff I find elsewhere - a typically pointless cyber-diary written as a daily personal exposition, but with the secret hope that someday someone will see something in it.
